Journey with Muslim Family Adventures into the spectacular autumn landscape of Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated as one of the great birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution. Here, beside the River Severn, innovations in the use of iron helped transform engineering, transport and the modern world.
Iron also holds a remarkable place in the Qur’an: “And We sent down iron, in which is great might and benefits for humanity…” [Qur’an 57:25]
This retreat invites us to explore that verse in the very landscape where iron, human ingenuity and technology changed history. Through purposeful education, exploration and reflection, we will consider how knowledge and technology are not ends in themselves, but powerful tools that can be used responsibly to serve people, strengthen communities and care for the world entrusted to us.
But this is MFA — so we won’t just be learning indoors! Across four days, families, couples and individuals will step into the beautiful Shropshire countryside for a programme of hiking, mountain biking, paddlesports, climbing, woodland exploration, night walks and other outdoor adventures, alongside visits exploring the extraordinary industrial heritage of Ironbridge Gorge. And at the heart of it all is what makes an MFA retreat special — adventuring together, eating together, praying together, learning together and building relationships across generations.
This October half-term, come and experience a retreat where faith meets adventure, nature meets technology, and history inspires us to think about the future.
Shropshire and Ironbridge Gorge
Shropshire is one of England’s most beautiful and varied rural counties, where rolling hills, ancient woodlands, dramatic valleys, rivers and historic market towns create an extraordinary landscape for exploration and adventure. Along the River Severn lies Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution, where pioneering developments in iron and engineering helped transform the modern world.
Venture further into the Shropshire Hills and the landscape becomes wilder, with Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd offering streams, waterfalls, open moorland and sweeping views across the countryside — wonderful terrain for hiking, mountain biking, exploration and reflection. In October, woodlands and hillsides glow with rich autumn colours, making Shropshire an especially beautiful setting in which to experience both the creativity of human civilisation and the magnificence of the natural world. It is a place where history, nature and adventure come together, providing an inspiring environment for families to explore, learn, challenge themselves and reflect on the signs of Allah all around them.
Accommodation
YHA Ironbridge Coalport provides a wonderfully atmospheric base for our Shropshire adventure, set within the Ironbridge Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site beside the River Severn. Housed in historic buildings associated with Coalport’s industrial past, the hostel places us right at the heart of a landscape where nature, history and human ingenuity come together. From the doorstep, we can explore the riverside, woodlands, historic settlements and industrial heritage of the Gorge, while the wider Shropshire Hills and Carding Mill Valley are within reach for bigger outdoor adventures. With shared spaces for eating together, praying together, workshops, conversations and community time, it offers exactly the kind of setting an MFA retreat needs.

We will reflect upon the Qur’anic words:
“And We sent down iron, in which is great might and benefits for humanity…”
Qur’an 57:25
What happens when knowledge, technology and human ingenuity are directed towards serving others? It is an opportunity for children and adults to connect history with questions about purpose, stewardship, innovation and our responsibility for the future.
